What is a calf strain or pulled calf muscle?

A calf strain, also referred to as a pulled calf muscle, is the overstretching or tearing of a muscle in the back of the lower leg. The gastrocnemius and soleus make up what is commonly known as the calf, and help to point the toes downward (plantar flex). When overused or improperly used, these muscles can become strained or torn.

Depending on the severity of the strain, you may experience swelling, tenderness, bruising, and difficulty walking.
